Temporary paper installation in Kilburn - part of my Kilburn library residency, looking at the mix of Edwardian and Victorian architecture and 1970’s brutalist housing estates there.
Temporary sculptural intervention in Kilburn as part fo my residency at Kilburn Library. Looking at contrasts in the built environment of the area, a contrast of Edwardian and Victorian residencies with 1970’s housing estates. This paper pillar was temporarily sited on a stairwell of a shortly to be demolished block of flats.
Photo Reliefs
Individually hand worked into low relief by the careful application of hand cut layers, these are archival quality giclee prints of original photographs taken by the artist of temporary interventions that are often mostly thinking about place.
Sculptures made from paper are installed in uniquely contrasting sites with the purpose of highlighting how these contrasts help to build up the unique sense of place we experience when recalling somewhere. When the photos are printed the artist then gets further prints made and hand cuts out elements of these additional prints and applies them to the surface to create a 3 dimensional image. The result is curiously hyper real as the eye works out what is in three dimensions and what is in two.

After using recycled plastics for a number of workshops with schools and community groups Anya decided to explore the potential of the material during a summer residency at Bath Artist Studios. This started an interest and determination to extend the use of this material in a fine art context - thus creating her Hopeful Monsters. Images here show finished works, works in progress and exploratory maquettes, the curvilinear forms loosely reference the Baroque style, an excess in style suiting the excess we have of the material used (waste plastics).
‘The Four’ references, most obviously the 4 elements, earth, air, fire and water. These are also closely linked to climate events that we hear about with increasing regularity - flooding, hurricanes, wild fires and earthquakes. Their wheels make them look comical and cartoonish and I’d like to think they are harbingers of the good things we can do to combat these events.
Each sculpture is approx 1m high.

Installed in Muswell Hill Library in 2012 this was an Arts Council England funded project that further developed my creative mapping projects and was the start of my detailed observations of architectural details and features. Base on historic and contemporary maps of Muswell Hill and the N10 area I held community workshops and made the work entirely form recycled locally source paper.
Within the maps there were sited a number of intricate paper cuts of individual buildings or architectural features.

The View From Here - exhibition view
During the exhibition visitors we're invited to ‘put themselves on the map’ they did this by illustrating pre-cut figures, trees, vehicles or by drawing building they knew of and siting them onto the map. Eventually the whole map was filled.
